Why visit Khao Lak?

For a clean sandy beach, kind and welcoming local people, delicious food and jungle national parks.

Getting there and around

We visited Thailand in April 2019 when our children were 4 and 7 years old.

We flew to Phuket and took a 1 hour minivan private transfer to our hotel.

We used local taxis from a conveniently placed taxi rank right outside of the hotel. The taxis could also be booked to take and wait for you for excursions which we did to visit the nearby national park and waterfalls.

Accommodation

We stayed at the Ramada, a 4 star hotel on the beach.

It had a fantastic pool and beachfront restaurant. It also had a kids club, yoga, beauty salon, and spacious family rooms.

The hotel was one of the best we have ever stayed in - peaceful and luxurious.

Our star rating: 5

Our cost rating: 4

Turtle sanctuary

We spent a day visiting the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre, a wonderful sanctuary where they care for different types of turtles until they are ready to go back into the wild.

Plus, they had a small shop selling souvenirs and rainbow ice cream. Turtles + rainbow ice cream = happy kids!

Beach

The hotel was on Bang Niang beach.

The Andaman Sea was very powerful - the waves and current were too strong to swim.

That didn’t stop us enjoying lots of beach time, making sandcastles, digging and collecting sea shells. The beach was spotlessly clean and stunningly beautiful.

Lampi Waterfall

In the Khao Lampi - Hat Thai Meuang National Park is this stunning waterfall.

A local taxi driver took us to the waterfall and her teenage kids acted as our guides!

A short hike through the jungle leads to the cascades and plunge pool.

In the pool are dozens of large cat fish which was a bit of a surprise!

The water was refreshingly cool and much needed in the April humidity and heat.

Final Thoughts

Khao Lak was a gorgeous place with a peaceful atmosphere, and very easy to visit with young children.

We had some amazing food in the town’s restaurants. Our favourite was the Jasmine on Petchkasem Road.

Khao Lak was the perfect place to decompress from the intense sightseeing in Bangkok and Chaing Mai, and the Ramada Hotel was fantastic.
